Goats
Calling all animal friends! Do you want to give our animals a little bit of extra love? Why not think about sponsoring our cheeky goats!
- Goats can weigh anything from 35lbs (about the weight of a 4 year old child) to 230lbs (the same as a giant panda!).
- Goats’ pupils are rectangular, the same as many animals with hooves. This means they can see almost all the way around them without having to move. They can see around 320 to 340 degrees around them (a full circle is 360 degrees), compared to humans, who can see around 160 to 210 degrees around them.
- Goats are also thought to have excellent night vision.
- Goats are known for being willing to eat almost anything! It’s thought that goats chew things to find out more about them, and to see if they are edible.
- For centuries, young goats were called kids. It wasn’t until the 1800s that people started using the word ‘kid’ about children too.
- Pygmy goats (small goats) are pregnant for between 145 and 153 days. Humans are pregnant for about 280 days.
- Goats give birth to one or two kids. Each kid weighs about 2 to 4lbs when it’s born, and it can stand up and nurse (get milk from its mother) within minutes of being born. They can run and jump within 4 hours of being born.
- Each kid has a unique call. That, and its scent, is how its mother recognises it – not by sight.
- Like human kids, goat kids like to snuggle. A ‘kid pile’ is where lots of young goats curl up with each other for companionship and warmth.
